Loren and Nelson’s story began in college at Western Kentucky University, where they met through mutual friends and their sorority and fraternity. Though they didn’t start dating until after graduation, their connection grew during Loren’s time in nursing school and Nelson’s early engineering career. They weathered long distance until Loren graduated, bought a house together, and never looked back.
Years later, while on a family trip to Oahu, Nelson planned the perfect proposal. Midway through a hike to a lighthouse, a storm rolled in, soaking the group. Once it cleared, Nelson found the perfect spot on the edge of the cliff to get down on one knee. With the ocean below and his sister secretly snapping photos, he popped the question—followed by champagne he’d packed just for the moment. “I was amazed by his thoughtfulness,” Loren said. “It was perfect.”
For their wedding, the couple envisioned something relaxed, meaningful, and scenic—a celebration that fully captured the beauty of Colorado in the fall. Sky Valley Chateau fit the bill perfectly. “We got to host most of our guests in one place and enjoy four or five incredible nights together,” Loren shared. “The property, the stars, the mountain air—it was all dreamy.”
Family and friends filled the house for the weekend, creating a joyful, festive energy that lingered in every corner. “Our favorite moments were late at night—music playing, drinks in hand, soaking in the hot tub, introducing all our favorite people to one another.” Watching their worlds collide under the starry Steamboat sky was pure bliss.
On the big day, Loren and Nelson shared their vows privately in the terraced ceremony space. “It was the most emotional and intimate moment,” Loren recalled. Other highlights included tearful first dances, a candlelit dinner, and a heartfelt surprise—a single ladybug landing in her father’s bourbon during cocktail hour. “My grandmother had passed and my dad always said she’d visit us as a ladybug. It was the only one we saw the entire week.”
The celebration was filled with deeply personal touches: a memorial table of loved ones, a shared sip of Old Rip Van Winkle bourbon at the altar, and a bottle signed by each guest—now opened on every anniversary. Nelson’s wedding band is even crafted from the same bourbon barrel.
“The chateau was the perfect backdrop,” Loren said. “It balanced luxury with warmth and gave us space to create unforgettable memories.” Whether it was sunset chats on the terrace or morning coffee with family, every moment felt intentional.
Her advice for future couples? “Don’t stress. The venue is naturally stunning and the vendors know it well. Focus on the fun and the love—it goes by fast.”
